  • Local students to compete in National History Day Contest

    AREA — Eight students from Hartford, Sumner and Buckfield who participated in a recent History Day competition in Augusta will go on to represent Maine at the national level in June, reported Linda Andrews, RSU 10 gifted and talented enrichment teacher last week.

    The 2013 Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest will take place at the University of Maryland in College Park, MD, June 9-13. 

    National History Day (NHD) is an academic program for elementary and secondary school students that occurs annually. 

  • Dog rescued from thin ice on Lake Pennesseewassee

    RESCUED — Gage, a five-year-old mixed-breed, gets wrapped in a blanket after spending nearly an hour trapped in the ice on Lake Pennesseewassee in Norway last Saturday. Firefighters from Norway and Paris braved the freezing water to rescue the dog.

  • Truck tries to pass car, causes rollover

    LUCKY —  This 1999 Chevy S10 pickup, driven by Roger Paquin, 82, of Norway, rolled over after it attempted to pass another car in front of it on Route 118 in Norway Monday, reported Norway Officer Ron Cole. Neither Paquin or the driver of the other vehicle, Raymond Caron, 57, of Hebron were injured in the accident, Cole said. According to Cole, Paquin did receive some minor bumps and bruises, but was treated at the scene and released. Cole said if Paquin had not been wearing a seatbelt, his injuries could have been much more serious. 

  • Speedway's new owners gear up for first season

    GETTING READY — The racing season at Oxford Speedway will open this Sunday, April 21, with a PASS Tour 150 event. Tom Mayberry bought the Speedway last October and the new owner is bringing new races and events to the racetrack.

  • Treatment plant timeline 'on track'

    OXFORD —  The town is waiting for Department of Environmental Protection approval before breaking ground on a $13 million waste water treatment plant and municipal sewer system.

    Town Manager Michael Chammings, on Friday, said the town would have a better idea of when construction can begin this week.

    Oxford was waiting for DEP to complete its "very thorough" permitting process before finalizing a engineering contract, but Phase I of the project was still on track to be completed by the end of the year, Chammings said.

  • Buckfield opposes disposal plan

    BUCKFIELD — A proposal to ship garbage from a collection of southern Maine towns to a landfill outside Old Town is opposed by Buckfield selectmen.

    Mid-Maine Waste Action Corporation, which is owned by Buckfield and 11 other towns, is concerned that the proposal could bypass their Auburn waste-to-energy plant, possibly putting MMWAC in future financial straits.

  • Paris voters to decide fate of PD

    PARIS — Overturning a decision made less than a month ago, selectmen unanimously voted Monday to place a proposal to contract with the Oxford County Sheriff's Office for police services on the June 11 municipal ballot.

    If the contract is approved, the Sheriff's Office would replace the Paris Police Department as the town's law enforcement.

    Last month, board members voted 4-1 against bringing the issue to voters. At the time, board members said they believed there was little support for the proposal from residents.

  • Learning from the pros/Oxford Hills Middle School holds 26th annual career fair

    PARIS — More than 60 professionals from a diverse array of careers joined Oxford Hills Middle School students for the 26th annual Career Day at the middle school April 5.

    Students spent the morning interacting with presenters from fields ranging from alternative energy and stock car racing to the F.B.I. and heavy construction.

    Carlene Treadwell, OHMS guidance counselor, said the event gives students an opportunity to engage with professionals from careers they might not be considering or understand.

  • Couple injured in Norway motorcycle crash

    LOST CONTROL — Raffi Howhannesian, 58, and his wife, Rebecca, 31, were injured around 5 p.m. Monday when Raffi lost control of his 2008 Harley motorcycle after hitting a patch of sand on Main Street in Norway, according to Norway Police Officer Robert Federico Jr. Rebecca received minor abrasions. Raffi suffered head injuries that are not life-threatening, reported Norway Police Chief Robert Federico, Tuesday. 

  • $3.9M budget presented in Norway

    NORWAY —  A $3.9 million 2013-14 town budget was unveiled by Town Manager David Holt at the board of selectmen meeting April 4, after selectmen appointed 14 members to the budget committee. 

    If Governor Paul LePage's proposed biennial budget is passed, which eliminates municipal revenue sharing, Holt said the town would immediately need to cut $250,000 from its overall budget. 

    Taxpayers would then see a 2.25 percent rise in the tax rate, Holt said.
