Grant could keep Norway police officer
Apr 25, 2013 12:00 amNORWAY — A position in the police department slated for possible cuts could be saved if the department is approved for another federal COPS grant, Police Chief Robert Federico told selectmen during their meeting, April 18.
Federico said the Norway Police Department is currently paying for one of its officers using a four-year U.S. Department of Justice COPS Hiring Program (CHP) grant, set to expire December 31.

Oxford to review medical marijuana ordinance
Apr 25, 2013 12:00 amOXFORD — A committee is being tasked with reviewing the town's existing medical marijuana ordinance to make sure it conforms to the town's own needs and changes in state law.
The board of selectmen, in a meeting last Thursday, voted to have the town's ordinance review committee look over the existing regulation and recommend changes, according to Town Manager Michael Chammings, Monday.
$7M draft budget is presented in Paris
Apr 25, 2013 12:00 amPARIS — A $7 million draft budget was presented to selectmen by Town Manager Amy Bernard and department heads during a selectboard budget workshop April 19.
The budget is approximately $357,000 larger than last year. That increase is primarily driven by a $230,000 hike in the town's share of the SAD 17 budget.
Although the school budget accounts for two-thirds of the town's budget increase, larger individual department budgets are asking for about $127,000 more than last year.
McAlister Road decision stands
Apr 25, 2013 12:00 amBUCKFIELD — A decision to resume winter maintenance on a stretch of McAlister Road, previously considered abandoned, will stand and the issue will not be brought to voters at June town meeting, decided Selectboard Chair Warren Wright during the board meeting April 16.
Selectmen debated resuming winter maintenance on a quarter of a mile stretch of the road last fall after several property owners argued the town had previously admitted ownership of the road, and could therefore not legally consider it abandoned.
Police veteran to take over at Paris PD
Apr 25, 2013 12:00 amPARIS — A veteran police administrator is expected to take over as temporary Paris Police Chief after current interim Chief Michael Dailey leaves the position April 26.
Selectmen, at their meeting Monday, authorized Town Manager Amy Bernard to enter into an employment contract with Tideview Group, a Kennebunk-based consulting firm, and hire Jerry Hinton as interim chief.
Hinton will play a purely administrative role and would not have arrest power while working in Paris, Bernard said.
Otisfield revisits plan to create hiking trails
Apr 25, 2013 12:00 amOTISFIELD — Selectman Rick Micklon met with three members of the Otisfield Conservation Committee during an unofficial selectmen's meeting, April 17, to discuss the town's future Two Ponds Nature Area.
Selectmen Lenny Adler and Chairman Hal Ferguson were not present. Both men serve on the fire department and were battling a woods fire near Rayville Road, which began at 4 p.m. and took more than three hours to extinguish.
Paris audit back on track
Apr 25, 2013 12:00 amPARIS — A bookkeeper hired by the town to balance its general ledger has completed reconciliation of last year's books and the town's financial information has been provided to its auditors, Town Manager Amy Bernard reported at Monday's selectboard meeting.
In March, Bernard reported that the town's audit had been suspended after finding out that its general ledger account was unbalanced by $2.1 million.
Corey-Whitman hired as health officer for Norway
Apr 25, 2013 12:00 amNORWAY — The board of selectmen, at its April 18 meeting, unanimously appointed Code Enforcement Officer Joelle Corey-Whitman to serve as the town's health officer as-needed.
Corey-Whitman was hired as Norway's CEO in May 2011. She also serves as CEO in the nearby towns of Greenwood, Woodstock, Hanover and Upton.
She expressed interest in working as Norway's health officer in February, explaining, at the time, that she was also serving as health officer for Greenwood and Woodstock and things were going well.
