  • B'field board backs fire station borrowing

    BUCKFIELD — Selectmen, at an April 27 budget meeting, voted to recommend taking on $1 million in debt to finance the construction of a new fire-rescue station for the town as part of a projected $3.01 million 2014 municipal budget.

    The selectmen recommend using reserve funds to pay down next year's debt payment, allowing the town to trim its municipal budget by $50,000, according to Town Manager Dana Lee, on Tuesday. He described the April 27 meeting as cordial and productive.

  • Paris police to keep officer at high school

    PARIS —  The police department will continue having an officer at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School, SAD 17 Superintendent Rick Colpitts said April 25.

    Colpitts and Town Manager Amy Bernard spoke the morning of April 25, and Colpitts said the district is committed to hiring an officer, as long as the town still has a police department after the June 11 vote on whether to have Oxford County Sheriff's Office provide policing for the town.

  • Cook running for Norway selectboard

    NORWAY —  Former selectman Bruce Cook is seeking one of two open seats on the Norway Board of Selectmen. 

    Election papers were due Monday. According to Town Clerk Shirley Boyce, all candidates for municipal elections are running unopposed.

    Voters will choose two selectmen, a SAD 17 school board member and three Norway Library trustees during municipal elections June 11.

    Cook has returned nomination papers for a seat on the board of selectmen, Boyce said, and is seeking one of two seats held currently by Mike Twitchell and Irene Millett.

  • Holmes, Coffman run for B'field board

    BUCKFIELD —  Two candidates are vying for one three-year term on the board of selectmen.

    Glen Holmes and Cheryl Coffman submitted their nomination papers by the April 30 deadline. The election will be held on June 11. 

    Holmes, who has lived in Buckfield since 1998, served as town manager from 2004 until he accepted a position as director of the Western Maine Economic Development Council last year.

    CRITTER CATCHERS —   Fifth graders from Guy E. Rowe School examine insects at the Allen Day Community Garden in Norway as part of a "composters and pollinators" service learning day with staff from the University of Maine Bryant Pond 4H Camp on April 26.

    DOUSING — A Maine Forest Service helicopter drops water onto a large woods fire in Woodstock on Wednesday. 

  • Signatures sought for RSU 10 withdrawal

    SUMNER —  A resident who supports Sumner's withdrawal from the RSU 10 school district told selectmen at their meeting Tuesday that enough signatures have been gathered for a withdrawal petition, but additional signatures were still being sought. 

    Two weeks ago, resident Jeff Pfeifer sent an e-mail to the town on behalf of another resident, Lana Pratt, stating that the Save Our Schools group intended to turn in a withdrawal petition on April 23, the date of Tuesday's meeting, depending on the number of signatures obtained.  

  • Kids clean-up trash on Earth Day 2013
