  • Paris accepts less expensive proposal from Sheriff's Office

    PARIS — A final contract proposal from Oxford County Sheriff's Office for police services in Paris was accepted by the board of selectmen during its meeting Monday, to forward to voters for municipal elections, June 11.

    The updated three-year contract is substantially less expensive than the proposal submitted to the board earlier this year. The cost for the first year of service is now set at $548,159, and the second and third year costs are $428,077 per year.

  • Paris board approves town meeting warrant

    PARIS — Board members approved nearly all the 31 articles included on the annual town meeting warrant during its meeting Monday.

    The warrant includes 12 money articles, that work out to a nearly $4.1 million municipal budget, around $51,000 larger than last year. Including payments to SAD 17 and Oxford County, next year's budget is $6.96 million.

  • Board approves $35.9M SAD 17 budget

    OXFORD — School board members on May 6 voted unanimously to approve a $35.9 million 2014 budget, which includes a 6.5-percent increase in the local cost for schools.

    Superintendent Rick Colpitts, during the meeting, told board members the budget projections had changed very little from when it was presented in April.

  • Architect: B'field fire station lacks 'basic life safety' standards

    BUCKFIELD — The town's current fire-rescue station is riddled with code violations and life safety issues and full-scale renovation or replacement is absolutely necessary, according to an architect hired by the town to study the building.

    Andy Hyland, from Portland-based Port City Architects, presented selectmen options for renovation or new construction during their meeting Tuesday.

  • School board tables SRO contract

    OXFORD — A contract with Paris Police Department for a school resource officer was tabled by the SAD 17 school board during its meeting May 6.

    Finance Committee Chair Joe Vaillancourt told fellow board members the committee still had questions on some "minor" wording issues in the contract it wanted to address before recommending the contract. 

    There has not been a formal contract between the town and the school district for the last 10 years, Superintendent Rick Colpitts told board members.

  • District receives $33k to study recreation center

    OXFORD —  The school district may be making its first steps towards realizing a community recreation center after receiving a $33,000 grant to study the proposal.

    Superintendent Rick Colpitts, at the SAD 17 school board meeting May 6, told board members the district received the grant from the Stephens Community Healthcare Foundation.

    The intention would be to use the money to fund a feasibility study to determine concept designs and cost estimates for a community recreation center connected to the school district, Colpitts said.

  • Hours after rollover, SUV catches fire in lot, destroys boat

    CAR FIRE — A Jeep SUV involved in an accident earlier in morning Friday caught fire in a lot at 30 Alpine St. in Norway. The fire destroyed the vehicle and the adjacent fiberglass boat, reported Norway fire Chief Dennis Yates. 

  • Paris board recommends $71k in cuts

    PARIS —  The board of selectmen, at a special meeting Monday, voted to recommend approximately $71,000 in municipal budget cuts including salary raises for town employees, capital improvements and streetlights.

    According to Amy Bernard, on Tuesday, the board's recommended municipal budget is $4,096,616, a $50,000 increase from last year.

    With Paris' share of the SAD 17 and Oxford County budgets, the board's total recommended budget is $6,959,412, Bernard said.
