Residents ask town to plow Riverside Drive
Jan 13, 2011 12:02 amMECHANIC FALLS — Residents of Riverside Drive came to the council meeting to ask the town to plow their road. The residents who live on the road are concerned about the last half-mile of road, which is not currently maintained by the town in the winter.
Gravel pit owners fined, offer donation
Jan 13, 2011 12:02 amPOLAND — A gravel pit on Whalesback Drive continues to be a source of controversy, as neighboring resident Michelle Arsenault attempts to block local business owners Peter Bolduc and Cyndi Robbins from gaining a commercial license.
Bolduc, who is a town selectman, and Robbins, who owns Cyndi's Dockside and the Poland Spring Resort, were fined a total of $300 for continuing to operate for two days beyond a cease-work order issued by the town. The amount represents an escalating fine, which cost the owners $100 for the first day, and $200 for the second day.
Town considers more work on Opera House
Jan 13, 2011 12:02 amNORWAY — Town Manager David Holt told town officials that the Norway Opera House could be a component of a massive, half-million dollar Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application designed to spruce up Main Street.
Now that stabilization efforts on the historic building are drawing to a close, the board will attempt to identify an owner. The structure is still in litigation with former owner BiTim Enterprises, Inc., a company owned by New Hampshire developer Barry Mazzaglia.
Healthy Weight Week

However, about 16 years ago a nutritionist from North Dakota initiated Healthy Weight Week, which is promoted during the third week in January.
Paper now 75 cents
Jan 13, 2011 12:02 amAREA — The single copy price for The Advertiser Democrat will be 75 cents as of January 20. In spite of the ever-increasing cost of newsprint and other sundries, the Advertiser Democrat has not raised its price in four years.
There will be no price increase, at this time, for subscribers.
Community urged to participate in health issues
Jan 13, 2011 12:02 amSTATE-WIDE — Mainehealth has launched its health index, and Healthy Oxford Hills (HOH) is taking notice.
The statewide organization is tracing six leading health indicators in comparison with the rest of the nation, and although the news wasn't all good, it wasn't all bad, either, the organization announced January 3.
Maine has moved up from the ninth healthiest state to the eighth, according to Deb Deatrick, the organization's vice president for community health.
Otisfield to improve access
Jan 13, 2011 12:02 amOTISFIELD — Disabled citizens will find it easier to access the town office after the Board of Selectmen held its first meeting of the year on January 6.
A contract was awarded to Bartow Construction, of Otisfield, for what Selectman Lenny Adler described as "not so much a project, as a bunch of little projects."
Final year for $2.7M TIF payment

Casino question, like all laws, vulnerable to court challenge
Jan 06, 2011 12:01 amOXFORD — As casino opponents mull a legal challenge to the Oxford casino, camps on both sides of the issue claim that their side is certain to prevail in the courts.
"That happens a lot," said Mark Swanson, a legislative attorney for the state's Office of the Revisor of Statutes.
The court case, if it comes, will decide whether the referendum approved by voters in November constitutes an illegal monopoly for casino investment group Black Bear Entertainment (BBE).
