Charity poker returns to town office
Jan 27, 2011 12:01 amNORWAY — On February 12, the town office will once again be home to a Texas Hold 'Em poker tournament.
The poker tournament is a charity fundraiser for Responsible Pet Care, a local no-kill cat shelter. It was held in the town office once before, in January, and town officials say they've gotten only positive feedback.
"I heard no complaints," said Town Manager David Holt. "Apparently, the participants like the location.
Holt said that he would recommend the town continue to approve the games on a case-by-case basis.
Board questions well valuation
Jan 27, 2011 12:01 amSUMNER — A property-owner who is unhappy with the value that has been assessed on his land prompted a discussion among town leaders about whether the town-wide revaluation should be modified.
The Peters property on U1, Lot 18 has been found to have a "grade 3" site improvement for a feature that includes a driven-point well.
A driven-point well is created by driving a pipe into the ground to access water, a method that is considerably less expensive than drilling.
Norway eyes $600K downtown grant

These aren't structures on the Island of Misfit Toys. They're buildings on Main Street, and town leaders say that they need help.
Main Street may be bouncing back, but that doesn't mean there aren't major obstacles to be overcome. Recognizing this, town leaders are considering a major leap forward in the ongoing effort to revitalize Main Street.
Gravel pit site walk delayed
Jan 27, 2011 12:01 amPOLAND — The permitting process of a gravel pit on Whalesback Drive has been delayed after a scheduled site walk was canceled due to inclement weather.
"We canceled it because the snow was too deep," said Chuck Finger, head of the Planning Board.
In the town's Comprehensive Land Use Code (CLUC), under "Requirements for On-Site Inspection," town ordinance reads that "within thirty (30) days of the Pre-application Meeting, the Board may hold an On-site Inspection of the property."
County commission passes budget hike for unorganized territories
Jan 20, 2011 12:01 amPARIS — County commissioners Tuesday approved a 2011-12 budget for the county's unorganized territories that requests a municipal tax commitment hike of 54 percent over this year's budget.
It's a steep rise, county Administrator Scott Cole said, but necessary to update roads in Albany Township that he said have been mostly neglected for years.
Much of the money will go to pay for road and bridge repairs that are expected to go $165,000 over budget for the 2010-11 fiscal year, and for the $222,000 road budget which is about 20 percent higher than last year's.
Businesses honored for hiring practices

The Bridgton Veterinary Hospital in Bridgton was recognized as the 2010 Large Business of the Year, and Fore Street Redemption in Oxford was recognized as the 2010 Small Business of the Year.
Big boost for Buckfield emergency services
Jan 20, 2011 12:01 amBUCKFIELD — The Buckfield Rescue Department has taken a quantum leap forward in providing medical services to area citizens.
As of 1 p.m. on January 4, the department became permitted to perform at the paramedic level.
"We are now practicing at a higher license level," Chief of Service Lisa Buck proudly told the Board of Selectmen. " ... It's definitely a huge benefit to this community."
Help on the way for area homeless

After a discussion led by Anne Stanley, of Norway's Christ Episcopal Church, the group decided to move forward with plans designed to help those in need to navigate the bewildering array of services that may be available to them.
Computers changing hands in Sumner
Jan 20, 2011 12:01 amSUMNER — It may be easier to get a free computer in Sumner, after town leaders have taken action to ensure that computers and monitors are more likely to be recycled than thrown away.
Town Clerk Susan Runes initiated the change, after noticing that what was being treated as trash by the town might be regarded as treasure by local residents.
During a recent meeting of the Board of Selectmen, Runes suggested that working monitors and computers be redirected from the town's Hazardous Waste building to a community Swap Shop.
Project Graduation committee to meet

A committee of parents, teachers, and friends have been meeting since September to discuss future projects, new ideas and fundraisers to support this 31st successful year of keeping OHCHS graduates safe after graduation.
The group's next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 20, at 6 p.m. in the Graphic Arts room at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School.
