Feb 24, 2011 12:01 amOXFORD COUNTY — Defense attorneys in the case of Dawn Solomon, who pled guilty in December to defrauding the MaineCare system for $4 million, were granted a continuance in her sentencing hearing.
Her sentencing has been pushed back to at least April. According to the courts, the continuance was granted for "family reasons."

Marijuana ordinance worries committee members
Feb 24, 2011 12:01 amPARIS — Members of the Paris Planning Board have asked the town to reaffirm the fact that they cannot be held personally liable for their work in drafting an ordinance to regulate medical marijuana dispensaries.
"At their request, I summarized what this board of selectmen has said in the past," said Town Manager Phil Tarr, "that people, residents, working judiciously on behalf of town committees are protected against personal loss."
Police seek mattress owner
Feb 24, 2011 12:01 amOXFORD — Police are trying to locate the owner of a mattress which was found on the side of the road.
Lieutenant Mike Ward of the Oxford Police Department says that the mattress, apparently brand new, seems to have fallen off of a truck on Route 121.
"It's a nice mattress," said Ward. "It's still wrapped in plastic."
The cost of a mattress can vary widely, from about $150 to as much as $800.
"It obviously fell off somebody's truck," said Ward.
Town hopes to save on energy costs
Feb 24, 2011 12:01 amPOLAND — The town is ready to stop heating the town hall building for its small recreation department.
“The little brick building, known as the Androscoggin Sheriff's Office is being renovated and the renovations are due to be completed at the end of this month,” said Town Manager Dana Lee. “Then ,we will move our recreation department into the back part [of the] sheriff’s building.
Lee says that the move will save the town money.
The newest street in Paris
Feb 24, 2011 12:01 amPARIS — A new street will be created off Ryerson Hill Road in order to service an addition to a subdivision by owner Ron Fitts.
A lot will be divided to create four new homes, located about a third of a mile northeast of Cole Brook on Ryerson Hill Road.
According to Code Enforcement Officer Gerald Samson, "he [Fitts] wants to call the new street Capitva Drive."
After a check, said Samson, "I have verified that the name does not sound like any other street name in Paris."
One dead, one critical after snowmobile crash
Feb 24, 2011 12:01 amPOLAND — A snowmobile crash on Middle Range Pond in Poland last Thursday left one dead and another in critical condition.
Robert Bissonette, 35, of Auburn, died on Friday from injuries sustained in a head-on collision with Jared Murphy, 20, of Poland.
Lawyer: Biddeford Downs project could come to Oxford County
Feb 24, 2011 12:01 amOXFORD COUNTY — Ed MacColl, a lawyer representing the Biddeford Downs project, is basing a set of legal arguments on the supposition that the competing casino project could move to a site in Oxford County.
The assertion comes as part of ongoing legal arguments about whether the casino site proposed by Black Bear Entertainment (BBE) is legal.
Peter Martin of BBE says that the prospect of uprooting projects from that area to rural Oxford County is unthinkable.
ATV battle getting ugly
Feb 24, 2011 12:01 amPARIS — An ongoing issue related to ATV use on Parsons Road has led to bickering among town officials, entrenched positions among citizens, and the threat of a lawsuit.
ATV rider Cliff Goodwin, who has been active on the issue, says that he will file a lawsuit against the town if officials improperly fail to restore ATV access to the road.
His son, John Goodwin, says that a lawsuit from his father wouldn't violate a previous assertion that the X-tra Mile ATV Club (XMAC) would not take this battle to the courts.
