  • Paris leaders debate $1M bond

    PARIS — A proposed $1M bond for badly-needed roadwork sparked discussion at a joint meeting of the budget committee and board of selectmen on Thursday, March 31.

    Prior to the meeting, selectmen and budget committee members toured some of the town's worst roads on a school bus to get an idea of the work that needed to be done. Upon returning to the town office, the officials said that they recognized the severity of the problem, but many disagreed about how to solve it.

  • Greenwood voters asked to fund firefighters

    GREENWOOD — Paid firefighters during daytime hours will become a reality in the Greenwood-Woodstock area, if Greenwood voters join Woodstock in funding the effort.

    A vote at the Greenwood town meeting in May will determine whether an enhanced Mutual Aid agreement between Greenwood and Woodstock will take effect on July 1, 2011

    The agreement has been worked out between Chiefs Al Curtis and Geff Inman over the past year. It has been discussed at numerous selectmen's meetings in both towns.

  • Last call for Mother of the Year

    OXFORD HILLS — The Advertiser Democrat is holding a Mother of the Year contest.

    Children in fourth grade may enter by writing a short essay telling us: Why My Mother Should Be Mother of the Year.

    Essays should be thoughtful and honest. They need to be in the child's words with no adult input. Essays will be published in the paper.

    The essays will be judged independently by a panel of three: Ann Siekman, director, Norway Memorial Library; The Reverend Anne Stanley and Toni Hamlin, retired fourth grade teacher.

  • State seeking ice-out info

    AUGUSTA — Maine residents who eagerly await that well-anticipated moment known as "ice out" on Maine's lakes and ponds now can share it with their friends, neighbors and the rest of the state.

    The Boating Facilities Division (BFD) of the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands, under the Maine Department of Conservation, is compiling ice-out information on its website and is asking Mainers to help out.

  • Cottage Street work may slow business

    NORWAY — A project to renovate the sewer system, water lines, and sidewalks on Cottage Street in Norway has some business owners a little concerned about their summer business.

    Jason Cyr owns the building at 7 Cottage Street that houses his business, Don's Redemption Center, and his wife's, Lisanna's Hair Salon. He is worried that he may not be able to open every day during his busy summer months due to roadwork that will shut Cottage Street down to everything but local traffic.
