Bethel man arrested following chase, assault on deputy
Jul 21, 2011 12:00 amBETHEL — A Bethel man was arrested and charged with six crimes after allegedly being involved in a vehicle chase and a series of altercations with an Oxford County Sheriff's Deputy.
Deputy Matthew Noyes said that he noticed a van driving erratically near Route 26 in Bethel and turned his cruiser's lights on. The vehicle, driven by James David Irish, 27, of Bethel attempted to flee. According to Noyes, the car chase ended on a small logging road, at which point Irish left the car and began to flee on foot.
Tensions continue to escalate over tax-acquired properties
Jul 21, 2011 12:00 amWEST PARIS — A dispute over three tax-acquired properties in West Paris continued to escalate on Thursday when an attorney writing on behalf of previous owner Kalvin Mason sent a letter to the town requesting that the properties – all of which are family-owned – be returned.
Mason and members of his family were on hand at the Board of Selectmen's meeting to again ask the town to return the property to him should he pay the $1,176 in back property taxes, accumulated over three years, owed on the three lots.
Oxford Crash
Jul 21, 2011 12:00 amTREE COLLISION — Lieutenant Michael Ward said that speed may have been a factor in a crash on Yeaton Swamp Road in Oxford. According to Ward, the driver of the car, a 17-year-old male from Otisfield did not require a trip to the hospital after he drove his 2005 Ford Taurus off the road and into a tree while trying to avoid an animal.
Gingerbread Footings

Parker confident of reinstatement
Jul 14, 2011 12:00 amCOUNTY — Suspended EMA Director Scott Parker was confident that he would be back to work following a two-hour, closed-door meeting with county commissioners on Monday.
"I don't have much to say except, I'll be back soon," said Parker as he emerged from the executive session with his attorney.
For their part, county commissioners and their attorney, Brian Dench, remained ambiguous on the topic, refusing to either confirm or deny Parker's statements.
Norway hopes to conclude Opera House acquisition next week
Jul 14, 2011 12:00 amNORWAY — The town's acquisition of the Opera House on Main Street is nearing its conclusion, say town officials.
The process of claiming the building from its previous owner has been ongoing since 2010, when the town voted to take the property due to unsafe conditions at town meeting.
A hearing for the town and the previous owner, Barry Mazzaglia, has been scheduled for July 14 in Oxford County Superior Court. At issue is the value of the property, which will determine the amount that Norway will pay Mazzaglia.
Paris stays within budget
Jul 14, 2011 12:00 amPARIS — Paris has done a good job of staying within its budget this year, Town Manager Phil Tarr reported to the Paris Board of Selectmen Monday.
"Everything is pretty much in the black," said Tarr."... We've been dealing with tight budgets for two or three years, but it's working."
Tarr distributed a report that showed that town accounts have spent anywhere from 66.7 percent of the amount budgeted, to 112 percent.
Most departments spent between 90 and 100 percent of their budgets.

Poland Springs makes Fortune's 'great things' list
Jul 14, 2011 12:00 amPOLAND — Poland Spring Water received national attention last week from Fortune Magazine, a publication most famous for annually anointing the nation's 500 largest corporations.
Poland Spring, the water company that originates in and bears the name of the small Maine town was ranked 32 in a listing of "100 great things about America."
"It's a huge honor for us that we're listed," said Spokesperson Heather McBean. "It's the first time in the two years that it's been running that an item from Maine has been honored and that, in itself, speaks louder than words."
