Oxford man injured in snowmobile accident
Mar 07, 2013 12:00 amOXFORD — An Oxford man was transported to the hospital Monday afternoon after he crashed his snowmobile on a trail off of Allen Hill Road.
The accident happened around 2:30 p.m., reported Oxford Police Officer Alan Coffin, Tuesday.
"A witness on scene said he was lying in the road right beside his snowmobile," Coffin said.
Michael Girardin, 50, drove his snowmobile to Allen Hill Road after crashing it on a nearby trail while traveling west from his home on Robinson Hill Road, Coffin said.

Colpitts urges attendance at EPS hearing
Mar 07, 2013 12:00 amOXFORD — A bill that would excuse school districts from fully funding their local share for education is going in front of the Legislature's education committee March 13, according to SAD 17 Superintendent Rick Colpitts.
During the SAD 17 board meeting March 4, Colpitts encouraged board members to attend the committee's hearing to support LD 367, sponsored by Senator Jim Hamper (R-Oxford).
State statute obligates the state to fund 55 percent of K-12 education, but in reality, it only fulfills around 84 percent of that commitment.

Mar 07, 2013 12:00 amWATERFORD — A comfortable majority of voters approved the adoption of a non-binding municipal resolution opposing the transport of tar sands oil through a stretch of the Portland-Montreal pipeline that runs through Waterford during the annual town meeting March 3.
The resolution passed 56 to 34, after an hour of testimony from residents, local and state environmental groups and representatives from the Portland-Montreal Pipeline, petroleum industry and Canadian government.
B'field chair walks out/'I'm done here'

"I've taken abuse for two-and-a-half years," Buswell said to fellow board members and an audience of fewer than 10 residents.
Paris expected to vote Monday on contract
Mar 07, 2013 12:00 amPARIS — The board of selectmen is expected to vote on a police services contract with the Oxford County Sheriff's Office following an executive session at its next meeting March 11.
If the board affirms the proposal, it will be sent to voters for approval in a referendum vote that could be held as early as April. The board could also vote against the proposal, killing the idea.
Woodstock awards dam repair bid
Mar 07, 2013 12:00 amWOODSTOCK — Woodstock selectmen Tuesday awarded a bid for dam reconstruction, wrapped up work on the town’s proposed 2013 budget and voted to support an effort to return rail service to the region.
The board unanimously chose Cross Excavation’s bid of $71,000 to rebuild the Lake Christopher dam. Other bids included Korhonen Land Care ($49,200), Andre’s Construction ($109,000); Bancroft ($109,750), and Wyman & Simpson ($123,364).
Property rights vs property maintenance in Woodstock
Mar 07, 2013 12:00 amWOODSTOCK — A public hearing last week on proposed changes to Woodstock’s property maintenance ordinance generated some heated debate over property rights and property protection.
The ordinance, in place since 2008, sets minimum standards for maintenance in order to protect public health and safety and to prevent nuisance conditions, according to its stated purpose.
Ceremony opens Opera House
Mar 07, 2013 12:00 amNORWAY — More than five years after a partial roof collapse threatened its very existence, the Norway Opera House was officially reopened during a ribbon-cutting ceremony last Friday.
More than 100 people filled one of the building's five recently renovated storefronts to share in the celebration.
Members of the Norway Opera House Corporation, town officials, representatives from Norway Savings Bank, architects and contractors spoke about their role in the project and its significance.
"It's really a community effort," said NOHC member Bruce Cook.
