West Paris may buy new road grader
Apr 18, 2013 12:00 amWEST PARIS — The board of selectmen agreed to consider purchasing a new road grader that was recommended by the town's road foreman, Bill Keach, at the April 11 meeting.
Keach told selectmen he recently received a letter from Maine Financial Group in Scarborough that included a list of equipment, and one grader in particular he thought the town could benefit from.
Maine Financial Group is one of New England's leading heavy equipment financing companies for individuals and businesses specializing, according to its website.
Cumberland jail stops taking Oxford County offenders/quandry for local jail poses questions about statewide system
Apr 18, 2013 12:00 amPARIS — Last month, Cumberland County Jail stopped taking inmates from Oxford County, placing the local jail in a difficult position and again raising questions about the efficacy of the state's jail system.
CCJ is currently over its budgeted capacity and has suspended taking inmates from other counties until its numbers go down, explains administrator Captain Wayne Pike. As of Friday, the jail, budgeted for 468 inmates, was housing 479.
Bill to reallocate casino revenue has little support in committee
Apr 18, 2013 12:00 amAUGUSTA — A bill to devote the state's Oxford Casino revenue exclusively to K-12 education was voted "ought not to pass" by majority on the Legislature's Education and Cultural Affairs Committee on April 12, but the bill's sponsor is holding out hope it may go to the floor of the Legislature.
The bill, LD 18, introduced by Rep. James J. Campbell (I-Newfield), requires the state to use tax revenue from the Oxford Casino to fully fund its statutory commitment to pay 55 percent of Maine's public K-12 education.
Local students to compete in National History Day Contest
Apr 18, 2013 12:00 amAREA — Eight students from Hartford, Sumner and Buckfield who participated in a recent History Day competition in Augusta will go on to represent Maine at the national level in June, reported Linda Andrews, RSU 10 gifted and talented enrichment teacher last week.
The 2013 Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest will take place at the University of Maryland in College Park, MD, June 9-13.
National History Day (NHD) is an academic program for elementary and secondary school students that occurs annually.
Dog rescued from thin ice on Lake Pennesseewassee

Truck tries to pass car, causes rollover
Apr 18, 2013 12:00 amLUCKY — This 1999 Chevy S10 pickup, driven by Roger Paquin, 82, of Norway, rolled over after it attempted to pass another car in front of it on Route 118 in Norway Monday, reported Norway Officer Ron Cole. Neither Paquin or the driver of the other vehicle, Raymond Caron, 57, of Hebron were injured in the accident, Cole said. According to Cole, Paquin did receive some minor bumps and bruises, but was treated at the scene and released. Cole said if Paquin had not been wearing a seatbelt, his injuries could have been much more serious.
Speedway's new owners gear up for first season

Treatment plant timeline 'on track'
Apr 18, 2013 12:00 amOXFORD — The town is waiting for Department of Environmental Protection approval before breaking ground on a $13 million waste water treatment plant and municipal sewer system.
Town Manager Michael Chammings, on Friday, said the town would have a better idea of when construction can begin this week.
Oxford was waiting for DEP to complete its "very thorough" permitting process before finalizing a engineering contract, but Phase I of the project was still on track to be completed by the end of the year, Chammings said.
Buckfield opposes disposal plan
Apr 11, 2013 12:00 amBUCKFIELD — A proposal to ship garbage from a collection of southern Maine towns to a landfill outside Old Town is opposed by Buckfield selectmen.
Mid-Maine Waste Action Corporation, which is owned by Buckfield and 11 other towns, is concerned that the proposal could bypass their Auburn waste-to-energy plant, possibly putting MMWAC in future financial straits.
Paris voters to decide fate of PD
Apr 11, 2013 12:00 amPARIS — Overturning a decision made less than a month ago, selectmen unanimously voted Monday to place a proposal to contract with the Oxford County Sheriff's Office for police services on the June 11 municipal ballot.
If the contract is approved, the Sheriff's Office would replace the Paris Police Department as the town's law enforcement.
Last month, board members voted 4-1 against bringing the issue to voters. At the time, board members said they believed there was little support for the proposal from residents.
