  • Sumner group claims more than 100 signatures for withdrawal petition

    SUMNER —  More than 100 signatures have been gathered for a petition to withdraw Sumner from the RSU 10 School District, claimed resident Jeff Pfeifer, a strong supporter of withdrawal, at Tuesday's selectmen meeting. 

    As of Wednesday morning, however, only 42 signatures had been turned into the town office and validated, fewer than the 49 needed to initiate the withdrawal process, according to Town Clerk Susan Runes.

  • Motion to restore on-call wage for B'field Rescue fails

    BUCKFIELD —  A motion to restore money to establish a $2 per-hour on-call rate for Buckfield Rescue volunteers failed to move forward during the selectmen's meeting May 7.

    Rescue Chief Lisa Buck included an additional $10,000 in the department's budget to cover the wage increase.

    The municipal budgets proposed by both selectmen and the budget committee, however, cut the on-call wage proposal, part of an effort to create a flat, zero tax increase budget for 2014.

  • Communications tower not coming to Otisfield

    OTISFIELD — U.S. Cellular will not build a communications tower in Otisfield.

    Nearly 16 months after the Planning Board approved the application by U.S. Cellular to construct a 180-foot communications tower on Scribner Hill to accommodate equipment for cellphone companies and the town's Fire Department, the issue is dead and the town still has no cell coverage.

  • B'field board OKs new appointment policy

    BUCKFIELD —  Revisions to the town's policy for committee and board appointments that requires applicants to appear before selectmen during a regular meeting, prior to their approval, was adopted by the board of selectmen during its meeting May 7.

    Prior to the adoption of the uniform policy, attendance at the board meeting in which the applicant's appointment would be discussed was required for some town committees but not others.

  • What would you like to see in a community recreation center?

    I like the plans the kids drew up at the school [of a recreation center]. I'd probably use the pool if I went there. A lot of people probably would.

  • Status of Goodrich Rd. to be determined

    HEBRON —  A resident who plans to erect a fence to secure his cows on his property asked selectmen at their meeting Monday about the status of Goodrich Road, to determine where to build the fence without impeding on public property.

    Aaron Geyer said Monday that a town tax map and a private survey of his property, given to selectmen for review, are "very different" from one another. 

    Selectman Dan Eichorn told Geyer the tax maps are intended for the town to keep track of taxes and are not a "100 percent accurate geographic representation." 

  • Paris accepts less expensive proposal from Sheriff's Office

    PARIS — A final contract proposal from Oxford County Sheriff's Office for police services in Paris was accepted by the board of selectmen during its meeting Monday, to forward to voters for municipal elections, June 11.

    The updated three-year contract is substantially less expensive than the proposal submitted to the board earlier this year. The cost for the first year of service is now set at $548,159, and the second and third year costs are $428,077 per year.

  • Paris board approves town meeting warrant

    PARIS — Board members approved nearly all the 31 articles included on the annual town meeting warrant during its meeting Monday.

    The warrant includes 12 money articles, that work out to a nearly $4.1 million municipal budget, around $51,000 larger than last year. Including payments to SAD 17 and Oxford County, next year's budget is $6.96 million.

  • Board approves $35.9M SAD 17 budget

    OXFORD — School board members on May 6 voted unanimously to approve a $35.9 million 2014 budget, which includes a 6.5-percent increase in the local cost for schools.

    Superintendent Rick Colpitts, during the meeting, told board members the budget projections had changed very little from when it was presented in April.
