Sparks fly in Paris ATV controversy
May 16, 2013 12:00 amPARIS — A simmering dispute over ATV access on town roads was nearly reignited Monday night, when selectboard members considered a request from a local ATV club to use town roads.
Members of the X-tra Mile ATV Club are requesting to use sections of Parsons and East Oxford roads for the month of June to conduct maintenance on ATV trails in the area.
The club had not, as of Monday's meeting, filled out a required non-standard road use form, according to a policy in place since 2011.
Historical Society seeking funds to complete renovations

The historical society is seeking additional grants and donations to complete the building's renovations and once again make it functional for Otisfield's residents and anyone else who wishes to use the space.

Pavilion in Harrison is 'a dream come true'
May 16, 2013 12:00 amCOMPLETE — Community members enjoy an outdoor concert at a newly-built pavilion on Crystal Lake in Harrison, May 5. The town's volunteer bicentennial committee began raising funds for the pavilion's construction in 2005 but never raised enough to complete it. A local contractor stepped in and finished the project just three weeks ago.
Woman injured in rollover on Route 121 in Mechanic Falls
May 16, 2013 12:00 amMECHANIC FALLS — A 28-year-old woman was thrown from her car Monday morning after the car apparently hit an abutment and flipped over several times on Route 121 by the Sawyer Bridge.
Deputy fire Chief Matt Fifield said the unidentified woman was driving north about 9:30 a.m. on Route 121 when her Chevrolet Tracker flipped, ejecting her onto the road.
She sustained head injuries, lacerations and possibly abdominal injuries and was taken to Central Maine Medical Center by LifeFlight, Fifield said. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Paris reconsiders property sale policy
May 16, 2013 12:00 amPARIS — The board of selectmen, on Monday, voted to sell a tax-acquired plot of land without putting it out to public auction, but it will probably be the last time board members make that exception.
Town Manager Amy Bernard told the board the parcel of land in question was previously owned by a relative of the purchaser, Glenn Geyer whose own property abuts the land.
Geyer offered to purchase the property, which is not buildable, for $2,000, Bernard said. The former owner owes $546 in back taxes on the plot, she told the board.
Oil industry attendence uncertain at Otisfield tar sands forum
May 16, 2013 12:00 amOTISFIELD — The town's conservation committee is inviting the public to attend a forum on May 29 at 7 p.m. at the Otisfield Community Hall to discuss the potential that the aging Portland-Montreal oil pipeline may be used to pump oil-sands derived crude oil from Canada south to Casco Bay.
Otisfield voters, at the annual town meeting June 29, will choose whether to adopt a municipal resolution opposing any change in the pipe's flow direction or the product running through it.
Paris' accounts reconciled/New bookkeeper sought
May 16, 2013 12:00 amPARIS — The town's general ledger has been balanced and its accounts are back in order, Town Manager Amy Bernard reported at the selectboard meeting Monday.
In late March, Bernard reported that the town's books had not been properly reconciled for more than a year and were unbalanced by more than $1 million. In April, the town hired an outside bookkeeper to clean up its accounts.
Cancer walk Saturday to benefit Oxford woman
May 16, 2013 12:00 amOXFORD — A walk scheduled for May 18 in Auburn will benefit 29-year-old Michelle Polley Abbott, an Oxford resident who was diagnosed with breast cancer in January, said Rachel Verrill, who helped organize the fundraiser.
The walk, organized by friends and family, will begin at The Festival Plaza on Main Street in Auburn at 10 a.m., one block south of Great Falls Plaza. All of the money raised at the event will go to help Abbott, her husband Ben and their two small boys.
