Veterans invited to Minot Consolidated School

MINOT — David Gilpatric was one of 41 veterans invited to the Minot Consolidated School on November 5. He was invited by his oldest grandchild, sixth grader Sydney Gilpatric. The outside sign was the first greeting. Each veteran was met near the security door and escorted to the sign-up roster and then assigned to their student’s classroom. What a welcome it was.

The cafeteria began serving at 11:30 a.m. The chow line moved very quickly and 41 veterans and 60 guests plus the whole school was fed. The fried chicken was very good.

The program consisted of a welcome, Pledge of Allegiance, Veterans Day history, branch recognition of veterans and patriotic songs sung by K-2 students. First and second graders signed to “You're a Grand Old Flag” by George M. Cohan, nine fifth and sixth graders were chosen to read their own essays based on “Why I am proud to be an American” and the third and fourth grade choir performed the closing number under the direction of the music teacher, Karen Smith.

At the conclusion of the program, one of the veterans expressed gratitude to the Minot School kids and staff for such a great recognition program.
