Poland Springs Academy takes a step back in time
OXFORD - The students of Poland Spring Academy visited the medieval style castle of John Hammond Jr. on October 16. Heavy plate armor was laid upon young limbs, a young lady was crowned queen and a brave lad was knighted, all in the Great Hall of Hammond castle that day. Situated on the Gloucester, MA coast, Hammond, the inventor of sonar, radar and many other important American inventions, built the Castle Museum in 1926. Filled with an eclectic collection of medieval and Renaissance architecture and artifacts, the castle gave the students the perfect setting in which to learn about life in the time of Knights. The class never lost interest in the 90-minute tour.
This was the first stop in a two-day field trip adventure. From here, the group went on to an evening complete with a medieval dinner, "knight" game competition, and rustic sleeping accommodations. The following day, the group volunteered at the Lowell Wish Project in Lowell, MA.
