Robert Edward Dupill II

PERU — Robert Edward Dupill II passed away at his home on Christmas day, December 25, 2010, surrounded by his loving wife, daughters and father. He was born in Rumford on June 6, 1950, son of Robert Dupill Sr. and Gloria Stanley Dupill. He attended local schools and graduated from Stephens High School in 1969, where he was a standout athlete. He attended the University of Maine at Orono, where he excelled as a player on the football team, earning the Ironman Trophy in 1973. After graduating college with a degree in history, he became an educator and varsity football coach at Lewiston High School. He married the love of his life, Linda Shorey, in August 1978. His proudest accomplishment was raising their two daughters, Emily and Natalie.

In 1982, he took over Stanley’s Furniture Mart from his parents, a family business that his grandfather started in 1936. This proved to be a perfect fit as he grew up in the furniture store and had always loved well-made furniture. He loved owning Stanley’s and meeting and knowing thousands of customers over the years. He also loved his employees and treated them as members of his own family.

Mr. Dupill was a true steward of his land. He devoted his life to making his property a wonderful place for family and friends. He single-handedly created gorgeous rock walls, ponds, flower and vegetable gardens, and waterfalls all over his ten acres of land. He was an avid organic gardener and produced an incredible bounty that was enjoyed by all his family, especially his wife and two daughters.

He was a devoted history buff, his specialty being local Maine history. He spent many hours pouring over local historical texts and his family, friends, and customers always knew that he could tell them amazing facts about the towns they lived in.

He loved to travel and especially loved Aruba, where his parents lived for many years. He also loved to cook and enjoyed foods from all over the world. Throughout his entire life, Rob was a remarkable athlete. He loved to golf and ski and was an outstanding long-distance runner. Rob was running on his treadmill and using his weight machines right up until last week.

He was an eternal optimist and always saw the best in people. He truly loved his life and lived it to the fullest. His incredible generosity and spirit will always live on.

Mr. Dupill is survived by his loving wife, Linda, and two adoring daughters, Emily and Natalie. He is also survived by his father, Robert Dupill Sr. of Holiday, FL; his grandmother, Maude Stanley of Rumford and his brother, Marc Dupill of Belmont, NH. He is predeceased by his mother, Gloria, and his brother, Gary.

There will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 p.m. on Thursday, December 30, at Parish of the Holy Savior, 126 Maine Ave in Rumford. Spring interment will be in Demeritt Cemetery in Peru.
