John P. Hemond


AUBURN - John P. Hemond, 90, of Minot died Tuesday, February 23 at Hospice House, with his loving family by his side.
     He was born in Lewiston, December 1, 1919 to Alphonse and Roseanne (Plante) Hemond. He attended schools in Lewiston, Canada and Minot and graduated third in his class from Mechanic Falls High School. After graduation John joined the Navy and served on the USS Battleship Oakland during World War II. In 1946 he married Priscilla T. Fournier at St. Mary’s in Lewiston. They purchased the dairy farm from his parents in 1962 and also ran their own excavation business.
     John dedicated many years to the Town of Minot. He served on the school committee, worked on town roads with his father and then became Road Commissioner. He also served as Dog Officer, Truant Officer, Election Clerk and was on the School Building Committee. He was also a Deputy Sheriff for fourteen years and on other committees including: Agway Petroleum, ASCA (FSA), Eastern AI, DHIA, Farm Bureau, the Grange, the Androscoggin County Jail Building Committee and the United Maine Craftsmen. He retired from dairy farming and excavation and then started a greenhouse business and did craft fairs, which he enjoyed very much. He especially enjoyed traveling everywhere on his tractor. He was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish at Sacred Heart, Auburn.
     He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Priscilla; four sons, John A. and wife Irene, Peter and wife Lisa, Michael and wife Tracy, James and wife Beverly; three daughters, Diane Demers and husband Maurice, Pauline Grenier and husband Lucien, Roseanne Campbell and husband Ron, all of Minot; seventeen grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; a brother, Andre Hemond of Scarborough; two sisters, Irene Patry of Hampden and Theresa Patry of Minot; a sister-in-law, Noella Hemond of Minot; a brother-in-law, Joe Bertrand of Connecticut; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Roland of Minot and George of Minot and Alaska; and a sister, Rita Bertrand of Connecticut.
     A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, February 26 at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish at Sacred Heart in Auburn followed by interment at St. Peters Cemetery in Lewiston. Family and friends may attend visitation on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Weston-Chandler Funeral Home 26 W. Dwinal St., Mechanic Falls.
