Betty A. Hazard
HEBRON — Betty Ann Hazard, 77, of Hebron died Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston after a very long and courageous battle with breast cancer. She was born in Hebron on November 13, 1934, the daughter of Guy and Alice Greenwood Collins. She attended school in Hebron and Mechanic Falls. She married Eddy Hazard on December 2, 1950.
She was employed in her early years in various local shoe factories. Later she attended school and became a licensed cosmetologist, eventually becoming owner of the Vanity Beauty Shop on Whitman Street in Norway. She later acquired the Northeast Laundromat in South Paris and grew it into the current Betty’s Laundry at 142 Main Street of which she was most proud. During those busy years she was also substitute rural mail carrier for the Town of Hebron. She was a volunteer with the original Hebron/Buckfield Rescue Unit, and the Hebron volunteer fire department women’s auxiliary. She and her husband Ed sponsored the local softball league “The Dukes of Hazard.”
She lived life to the fullest and always on her own terms. She adored her family and friends and always had an open door with the coffee on. She loved children and they seemed to be drawn to her. She took great pride in her home and loved caring for her lawn and gardens. She particularly loved spending winters in the desert at her home in Las Vegas.
Mrs. Hazard is survived by her son, Rodney and close family friend Kate Hatch of Hebron; her sister, Sadie Sturtevant of Hebron; nieces, Cheryl Letourneau and husband Norman and their sons, Corey and Adam of Hebron; Jaye Churchill and husband David Bouffard of Falmouth; nephews, Skip Churchill and wife Carol of Hebron, Dale Churchill of Hebron and Fred Collins, Jr. of South Paris; sister-in-law, Pat Collins and her daughters Julie, Penny and Brenda and numerous grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Eddy; sister, Arlene Collins; brother, Fred Collins and niece Linda Collins Cyr.
Family and friends attended visitation on Friday, June 8 at Chandler Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, 45 Main St., South Paris. All are welcome to join in a celebration of her life to be held on Saturday, June 23 at 2 p.m. at her home at 177 Back Street in Hebron.
