SOUTH PARIS — John L. O’Sullivan, 88, passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at Maine Veterans Home in South Paris with his loving family by his side. He was born on January 19, 1923 in New York City, NY to James and Catherine O’Sullivan, the last surviving child of seven children.

He was raised on 100th Street and Columbus Avenue in New York City and educated in New York City schools. He graduated from Commerce High School in NYC. He then received an associate degree in business from Packard Junior College.

He served his country proudly in the 1st US Army during WWII from 1943 to 1945 as an Antiaircraft Artillery Gun Crewman and was awarded five Bronze Stars.

He married Eileen O’Brien on September 27, 1947. He worked many years at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine where he retired as purchaser.

He was an exceptional baseball player and athlete captaining the Commerce HS baseball team for all four of his years and winning the MVP on their NYC HS championship team of 1941. After WWII he played one year in the New York Giants farm system.

He was a devout Roman Catholic, active parishioner and Eucharistic minister for many years.

He was a wonderful role model for his entire family, was loved and admired by many and will be greatly missed.

Mr. O'Sullivan is survived by his wife, Eileen; his daughters, Sheila Priola of Poland and Maureen Hanna and husband Charles of West Haven, CT; sons, John J. O’Sullivan and wife Mary of Yorktown Heights, NY and Patrick O’Sullivan and wife Stacey of Sparta, NJ; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by daughters, Nora O’Sullivan and Deborah Morrissey; grandson, Timothy Hanna and son-in-law, James Priola.

Family and friends attended visiting hours on Friday, May 20 at Oxford Hills and Weston Funeral Services, 1037 Main St., Rte. 26, Oxford. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Saturday, May 21 at Our Lady of Ransom on Elm Street in Mechanic Falls, followed by interment at the Highland Cemetery in West Poland. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. O'Sullivan's memory may be sent to the Community of Resurrection, P.O. Box 284, Casco, ME 04015 or Maine Veterans Home Activity Fund, 477 High St., So.
