SOUTH PARIS — Alma J. (Mikkonen) Dixon, 96, of South Paris died Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at Market Square Health Care Center. She was born in West Paris on December 26, 1914, the daughter of Elias and Katri (Komulainen) Mikkonen. She graduated from West Paris High School, attended Farmington Normal School and graduated from the University of Maine with a B.S. degree in Education.

She taught at schools within SAD 17 and Cohasset, MA. She worked summers as a Ranger Historian at the Adams National Historical Site, home of presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams, in Quincy, MA.

She was a member of Oxford County, Maine State and National Retired Teachers Associations and a member of Stephens Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the First Universalist Church of Norway. She was a Founding Member of the Finnish American Heritage Society of Maine.

She enjoyed music, dancing, gardening, cooking and traveling. She attended many of the annual FinnFest conventions held throughout the country. She also spent many summers in Pinehurst, ID.  

Mrs. Dixon is survived by her son, Robert (Bob) Dixon and his wife Mary Lou of East Falmouth MA; two grandchildren, Kevin Dixon and Lindsay Dixon and two great-grandchildren, Mariah and Aiden (Lindsay’s children). She was predeceased by four sisters, Olga Gellatly, Sylvia Wesanen, Miina Coolidge and Hilma Hudson.

Family and friends may attend visitation on Saturday, April 2 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Chandler Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, 45 Main St., South Paris. Interment will be later in the spring at the Finnish Cemetery in West Paris.
