Brenda L. Somers
NORWAY — It is with broken hearts that the family of Brenda L. Somers announces her passing on January 24th, 2011. For over a year, Brenda courageously battled cancer, a disease that knows no boundaries or compassion. Brenda was 62 years of age.
Brenda was born on January 6th, 1949. She lived her entire life in the Norway-South Paris area. She was the devoted daughter of Ralph and Bertha Bonney of Norway. She had four siblings, Gloria Day, Linda Knightly, Carla Fortier and Chuck Bonney. Brenda graduated from Oxford Hills High School and attended the University of Southern Maine.
Brenda had two children, Lisa Roberts of Biddeford and Norway and Scott Roberts of Norway. Through the years, Brenda was always her children’s biggest fan. Whether it was on the sidelines of a baseball game, attending a jazz concert, or giving advice on a homework assignment, she was there in support. In more recent years, she was extremely proud of Scott and Lisa’s professional success and took great pleasure in their happiness. She loved spending time with her family and looked forward to holidays and summers on the lake. She was a wonderful mother whose protective love and guidance will be missed every day.
In 1981, she married Gary Somers of Norway and had the good fortune to inherit four wonderful step-children, David Somers and his wife Ann of University City, MO, Ronald Somers and his wife Rebecca of Washington, DC, Anne Somers of Rutland, VT, and Philip Somers and his wife Darlene of Turner, ME. She adored their children Jennifer, Luke, Katie, Tyler and Megan.
Brenda and Gary enjoyed many things together; planting flowers in their garden, a lobster dinner on the coast, a trip to Prince Edward Island, but nothing topped the arrival of their “Girls.”
In 1994, Brenda’s love flourished with the arrival of her first granddaughter, Whitney Brook Roberts. Whitney and her Gramma had a special bond. As a 2 year old, Whitney would attempt to pack her little suitcase and announce to her parents that she needed to go to “Dramma’s” house.
In1998, Scott and Shannon had their second daughter, Tayla Kathleen Roberts. From an early age, Tayla had a way of tickling her Gramma’s funny bone. Whenever together, they seemed to find the humor in everything. They laughed all the way to Story Land on many occasions. Through the years, Brenda remained a doting grandmother. She held incredible Easter egg hunts, attended every school function and sporting event, and was so very proud to be Whitney and Tayla’s Gramma.
Brenda was the owner of Somers in Maine, a successful craft business that she established in 1997. Brenda most recently worked at Stephen’s Memorial Hospital. She enjoyed the opportunity to learn something new and was grateful for the many friends that she made.
Brenda was predeceased by her Father and two sisters, Gloria and Linda. Her family takes great comfort in knowing that she has been reunited with her Father, a man she adored and admired her entire life. And they’re quite certain that she received a tail-wagging welcome from Miss Ella.
Brenda is survived by her Mother, Bertha Bonney of Norway; her husband, Gary Somers of Norway; her daughter, Lisa Roberts and her fiancé Michael Donohue, her son, Scott Roberts and his wife Shannon and their daughters, Whitney and Tayla; her younger sister, Carla Fortier of West Paris; and her only brother, Chuck Bonney of Norway.
Brenda and her family would like to thank the nurses of Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice (Kim, Deborah, Corinne, Michelle, Britney, and Betty) for their care and support.
Services are Saturday, January 29, at 2 p.m. at the Second Congregational Church, lower Main Street, Norway. Arrangements are with Oxford Hills and Weston Funeral Services.
