Gordon E. Smith

NORWAY — Gordon E. Smith, 83, of Norway passed away on Friday, January 14, 2011 at the Maine Veterans Home. He was born in Oxford on October 18, 1927, the son of Egbert and Delia Green Smith. He graduated from Oxford High School where he was a pitcher for the baseball team. He also played minor league ball. He entered the U. S. Air Force during World War II. He attended East Coast Aero Tech before being called back into active duty during the Korean War. He married Betty Benedetto on September 24, 1951.

In 1958 he took over management of the Red/White store and in 1961 he opened Smith’s Shop ‘n Save. He served as President of the Jr. Chamber of Commerce, the Oxford Hills Boosters Club and Norway Country Club. He was a member of the Norway/Paris Kiwanis Club, the Norway/Paris Fish and Game and served on the building committee at St. Catherine of Sienna Church. He was a director at Norway National Bank and Oxford Bank. He also served as trustee of Stephens Memorial Hospital. He enjoyed fishing, skiing, hunting, golf and travel. He was a member of the Cinnamon Camp Club and the Kennebago Lake Camp Owners Association.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife Betty of Norway; a son, Michael and his wife Beth of Bethlehem, PA and three grandsons, Benjamin, Matthew and William. He was predeceased by a brother, Norman and a sister, Gloria.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, January 22 at 11 a.m. at St. Catherine of Sienna Church. Family and friends may attend visitation from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday prior to the church service at Chandler Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, 45 Main St. South Paris. Interment will be in the spring at Lakeview Cemetery in Norway. Donations in his memory may be made to the Maine Alzheimer’s Association, 170 U. S. Route 1, Suite 250, Falmouth, ME 04105.
