North Norway

NORTH NORWAY — We had our furnace cleaned this morning and now Dead River is here making an oil delivery. So we are essentially broke. It costs an obscene amount to fill up the car now to say nothing of what it costs to fill the oil tank.

We haven’t had any oil since last spring so guess I shouldn’t complain. Gas has gone down a few cents now just before the election. That is just coincidence, right? Actually I know nothing about the cause of fluctuations in the price but it goes up a lot faster than it goes down.

Mary and Frank Perham had friends visit from New Hampshire who took them out to eat at the American Tavern (formerly The River) restaurant. They had a very nice lunch and Mary said the place had been done over, so we may give it a try soon.

I had an appointment to have my eyes checked on Tuesday. Had been going to Dr. Holt in Portland but he retired so I had an associate of his. He wasn’t happy with what he saw, practically no one is as I am not a sight for sore eyes, so I am scheduled for further testing.

I imagine one of the meds I am on is affecting my eyes but we shall see. Glad Dell was driving as my eyes were dilated and I could not bear to keep them open. Told Dell I could not help him drive and he bore up manfully to that fact.

Sears in Lewiston is closing and having a sale so Charlie wanted to check things out. He and Pat picked us up and we went down on Thursday. Sort of disappointing for the men.

They were expecting to find all manner of tools on sale but the markdown was a negligible 10% and they found nothing they wished to purchase. I found some socks which pleased me.

We had an excellent meal at Ruby Tuesdays, checked out BJ’s and came home. Didn’t spend much and had a nice day.

Wednesday is spaghetti day at Pat and Charlie’s. Kara and Six came down to partake and Paula drove by just then so Pat called her and asked her to come also. Six really gets into spaghetti so they partially disrobe him and let him at it. Paula had been up to Orono at the new jobsite.

She needs to be in two places at once but will split her time between home and jobsite as needs occur. The cats were disappointed to find themselves in Orono instead of Arizona but only complained a little.

Dell has gone out to the recycling center, grocery shopping and to have his hair cut. The morning has flown by as has the month. We are prepared for trick or treaters but weatherwise, do not know as it will be very nice out.

Hope we are outside the circle of the greatest wind, rain and snow. We can only wait and see. Have flu shots Saturday. Have you had yours? Better get one.

You must have thought the old lady had lost her marbles when you read the ending of my column last week. What I wrote was “I think the choice is simple - free enterprise or socialism." How it became the caboose is beyond my ken.

Happy birthday to Glenn Hayes and Pamela Perham Price and a Happy Anniversary to Paul and Brenda Perham.

November 6 is decision time. Campaign rhetoric has been ugly and we have been subjected to piles of biased media misinformation and nasty political commercials. It’s difficult to get to the truth. I say we have to vote and pray that God in his mercy will guide our country and protect us.
