West Sumner

WEST SUMNER — I am writing this on September 16. It was 35 degrees on September 17, so I decided to pick off my tomatoes from my topsy turvy plant.

This was actually last week's news. Last Thursday was a busy day. Kendall and Ruth came to work on my garage. The bottom boards had rotted on one side due to too much dirt and grass growing onto them. I didn't know enough to keep them cleaned off.

Now I do and I will. Kendall had all the material needed to fix these boards. He started around 10 and had the new boards all on by noon. My daughter Karen showed up by then and I had a pork roast, potatoes and carrots in my crock pot. We took a break and ate lunch.

I enlisted Karen to clean and do the dishes while Ken, Ruth and I started painting that side of the garage. We painted that whole side, getting it done by 3 p.m. Ken and Ruth went home and Karen and I headed to Walmart to get supplies for supper.

When Karen comes over we invite Brent, Carol, Ben, Gretchen and Ethan to come for supper. We bought fully cooked chicken and had French fries, cole slaws, corn on the cob, biscuits, cupcakes and ice cream.

It was a fun time. Ethan, my 17-month-old great-grandson, is quite the entertainer. Brian and Todd arrived before we started eating, making for more excitement.

Friday, September 14, I called Thelma Kendall. She told me that the bridge on the Redding Road was going to repaired. So I talked to Jim Keach, our road commissioner, to see what was going to take place. He is going to re-deck the bridge on September 19.

This bridge is the one right after the Goodberlet place. This house was owned by a missionary-pastor Harold Matthew before the Goodberlets. Just a bit of Sumner history. Nelda O'Brien, Jeanne Abbott's sister, has been here visiting Jeanne for a few days as Jeanne has been down with an illness.

Brian had a day off on Monday, September 17. He transplanted my two big hosta plants onto my bank. We cleaned out the whole front flower garden. Brian called his father to come over and help move the picnic table, the bench and the bridge into the garage.

He put the table away and now my car is in the garage. The lawn also got mowed. I am pretty much ready now for winter. Hope I haven't bored you to death with all my doings. Have a great day.
