NORTH NORWAY — Dell’s aunt, Alma Whitman, used to write a column, “Go Shoes,” for the Bethel paper. I feel like go shoes this week. We have been out every day. Monday was Aquatics in the pool, then lunch and program at AARP. The money was due for the Casco Bay Luncheon trip on August 13, so if you were not at the meeting please arrange to pay Pat Pulkkinen right away. Also there may be a seat or two available if you are late deciding you would like to go. Call Pat at 743-8513 for information. Healthy Oxford Hills presented an informative program and one of the topics of interest to me was an effort to bring a Community Center with an Olympic-sized pool to Oxford Hills. That is something that is needed and I could support.
Donna Primozich from North Norway called and gave us a very helpful tip regarding deer eating all our flowers. She said they spread milorganite around in the gardens and the deer do not like the odor and stay away. We are going to Paris Farmers Union and purchase some right away. We thank her very much for the information. We have a few hostas and some other blooms left which we would like to save. The pesky deer roams at large in our back yard and after we are in bed comes up close to the house and has a snack.
Tuesday we went to Portland to the monthly luncheon for Marine Corps veterans and active Marines. We had an excellent attendance with four active Marines there. Eleanor Heidrich went with us and gave us some beets and swiss chard. We have been lucky with donations of that sort, not having a garden ourselves this year. I cannot eat as many greens as I would like as the doctor said my last blood work wasn’t just right and warned me off. I thought fresh produce was good for you but apparently not always.
Wednesday was more aquatics and then laundry and housework. I went to bed early and was thankful the fireworks had subsided. Milt Inman had called and invited us to a gathering of the survivors of our West Paris High School Class of 1948. This was Thursday, the 12th at noon at the lakeside café in Harrison, Ruby Slippers. I must say we weren’t a bad looking lot considering everything. Incidentally, the food and service was very good at the Ruby Slipper.
Sixty-four years ago we thought we could rule the world. Owen Morgan asked us for a moment of silence to remember our classmates who aren’t with us anymore. Then we gabbed and reminisced. Attending were Milton and Eleanor Inman, Amy and Earl Andrews, Owen and Pauline Morgan, Ruth Farr Hazelton, Beryl Bonney, Dee Dee Small Chase, Marilyn Andrews Estrada and husband, Beverly Smith Glines, Priscilla Cole Durdin, Edith Cole, Dell and Betty Hayes. Some were guests but ten were classmates. Herbert Andrews was not able to be with us at this time as he comes to Maine later on. I worked with an anesthesiologist who said the idea is that blood goes round and round and air goes in and out. As long as we keep accomplishing that we will be alright.
Coming home from this gathering we saw an accident which reminded us that one never knows when we will find out our expiration date.
The AARP is going to have another food drive this fall. We thought we would continue the theme of Load the Boat but if anyone has any better idea please let Pat know. See above telephone number.
You cannot drink yourself sober and you cannot spend yourself rich, that’s the thought for today.
