Martin Luther King Day of Service program
NORWAY — Join volunteers across Maine on Monday, January 17, a national holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., by serving others in our community. Called "A Day On, Not A Day Off," this will be the 25th anniversary of this national holiday and the third year that Norway Memorial Library will offer this program matching people with volunteer work at nonprofit organizations in downtown Norway. The event is open to adults and teens in grades seven-12. Volunteers will meet at the library at 12:30 p.m. for a brief introduction and will head out to their designated sites at 12:45 for two hours of work at the organizations. They will return to the library at 3:15 p.m. for a program of reflection and refreshments that will end at 3:45.
This year, nonprofit organizations include Western Foothills Land Trust, Unitarian Universalist Church, Norway Historical Society, Fare Share Food Cooperative and Norway Memorial Library. Some volunteer work opportunities include pie making for the community lunch, painting at Fare Share and filing at the Historical Society, as well as other opportunities.
The volunteer work for Western Foothills Land Trust will take place on Saturday, January 15, from 10 a.m. to noon at Roberts Farm Preserve. The organization is holding a snowshoe race and needs volunteers to help run this event which is on the actual birthday of Dr. King.
Learn more about the community's resources and support community organizations through this program by offering to serve. Call Norway Memorial Library at 743-5309 to sign up as a volunteer or for more information. The deadline to register is Thursday, January 13.
