Fire crews contain house fire in Poland
UNSCATHED — A Poland firefighter emerges from a house on Watson Road where crews were able to contain a fire in the basement of a home. No one was injured and damages were limited to the house's basement.
POLAND — A family in Poland was fortunate to escape a morning fire, caused by a single candle, on Monday with minimal damage and no injuries.
A fire started in the basement of the house at 50 Watson Road and filled the house with smoke, said Poland Fire Chief Mike Bosse. Smoke alarms sounded and the house's residents noticed smoke coming from their basement.
The call came in to the fire department at 7:15 a.m. and firefighters arrived on scene at 7:29 to find the fire still confined to the basement. Crews from three other towns, Oxford, Mechanic Falls, and Raymond, also responded and were able to stop the fire from spreading.
"They were very fortunate," said Bosse of the family. "There was some damage in a basement room, but it was well-contained."
Mutual aid responders from the other towns were able to leave shortly after arriving, and Poland crews were on scene until 11:30 checking out the scene.
Bosse said the cause of the fire was determined to be a lit candle left unattended in a basement room.
