NORWAY — Local patriot Gaynor Fitch donated a "Flag of Honor," which commemorates the victims of the September 11 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, to the town of Norway last week.
Police Chief Robert Federico says that he is grateful to receive the flag, which has the names of thousands of victims written inside its red and white stripes.
"It will be nice to have it on the town's pole," said Federico, who said that the flag would likely be displayed on the town flagpole on special occasions.
Fitch says that he feels it is important to honor the victims of the attack, some of whom come from Maine.
"A couple in Harrison lost their daughter and son-in-law, who jumped off the 95th floor," said Fitch.
Fitch says that he has mixed feelings about the country's continued response to the terrorist attacks, but says that it is important to remember "not just the victims, but the soldiers" who have given their lives in the global effort against terrorism.
John Michelotti, who designed the flag in the aftermath of the attack, says that he was motivated by a desire to immortalize the individual victims, to give comfort to the families left behind, and to create an enduring symbol "of the human sacrifice that occurred on September 11, 2001."
