Town employees paid double for Christmas Day work

NORWAY — Full-time Norway employees who are called in to work on Christmas Day will get double pay this year, after a unanimous vote of the Board of Selectmen.

The move came after Town Manager David Holt made a case for the employee who, he said, have had a "tough year."

"Unlike employees in other towns, and unlike other years," said Holt "this year, Norway employees didn't receive any pay adjustments or any pay increases of any kind."

Holt noted that the non-union town employees had not gotten an increase, while their unionized counterparts on the police force had.

"In light of the fact that the non-union employees have had a tough year," said Holt, "it's a good gesture to make this year in recognizing the fact that you just gave this to the police union."

The board signed a contract with the police union last month after a lengthy negotiation period.

"I would recommend to you that any full time employee who gets called out on Christmas day gets paid double time this year," said Holt.

The motion passed unanimously.
