West Paris inches closer to single stream recycling

WEST PARIS —The selectmen held a brief meeting the night before Thanksgiving to discuss the transfer station and safety gear for the public works crew.

Town Manager John White told selectmen that with a bid expected on an electric service upgrade for the transfer station, the switch to single-stream trash handling is well under way and on schedule.

The Department of Environmental Protection, though, is reviewing plans for the location of a compactor which, White said, are minor details in comparison to what the EPA has already approved.

The town's budget is right on schedule, White added.

"I don't expect any significant over-expenditures," he said.

Chairman Dennis Henderson expressed concern, echoed by Selectman Wade Rainey, that the public works crew needed new reflective safety vests to wear while working. They directed White to look into ordering any other personal safety gear the crew needed, perhaps even conducting an inventory.

White said he'd get on it right after the holiday weekend.

The board adjourned after the 25-minute session with agreement to meet again December 9.
