Transfer station running smoothly
GREENWOOD — Despite some minor problems at the Greenwood and Woodstock transfer station, things are"pretty smooth at the moment," said Manager Robin Wooten at a November 23 transfer station meeting attended by selectmen and town managers from both towns.
Problems include "people still putting stuff in the wrong boxes and people dumping metal after hours."
The recycling containers were moved to improve visibility and to make snow plowing easier.
Wooten informed the town leaders that G&W cannot take any item containing asbestos, such as old boilers, under any circumstances. Old asbestos shingles can come in at no more than three linear square feet at a time. They can not take any 9 x9 inch flooring tiles, as new regulations deem them all to contain asbestos.
More new regulations require contractors to be licensed to handle lead paint for disposal purposes. All chips must be wrapped in plastic, labeled as such, and then thrown in a dumpster.
Commenting that several local businesses come in three times a week with trash clearly commercial in nature, Wooten requested guidance from the selectmen. Much discussion ensued, with no action taken.
After more discussion, it was decided to accept refrigerators, and any other freon-containing appliance, for recycling. The person dumping the refrigerator must remove the door and Big Green Recycling, out of Bow, NH will pick them up free of charge to the towns.
Also, washers and dryers will be accepted for disposal in the metal bins, again with no charge to the dumper. Woodstock Selectman Carl Young commented he "would rather see them in the containers than out in the woods."
Wooten said many places charge fees for disposal of appliances and that it might be a good idea to look into this as disposal costs increase.
The selectmen voted to add $10,000 to the Capital Improvement account to cover costs of any upcoming changes at the station. The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has issued site plan approval for some modifications.
