McFalls woman, toddler rescued
MECHANIC FALLS — A Mechanic Falls woman, along with her two-year-old daughter and family pets were rescued from their home by boat on Monday as the heavy rainfall that hammered the region over the weekend continued.
Around 8 a.m., rescue workers got a call that the family was trapped at their home at 174 South Main Street because of flooding in the driveway. The only way out was by boat.
The house sits on the edge of the Androscoggin River.
According to Mechanic Falls Police Officer James Avery, the water was about waist high when Roberts got in her vehicle and attempted to leave her home with her daughter and pets.
"She realized she couldn't get out, went down the driveway and ended up getting stuck," he said.
Rescue crews used a boat to get up Roberts' driveway and took the family, including a dog and a cat, to safety.
On Monday, when the flood stage was at 13 feet, the National Weather Service issued a flood warning for Androscoggin River until Wednesday morning. The river was expected to rise to 17.3 feet Monday before falling below flood stage early on Wednesday.
