HARRISON — Harrison’s 5th annual Youth and Family Ice Fishing Derby was held Saturday, February 23 at Long Lake and the Town Office. The derby volunteer crew determined that this year’s derby was the best yet.

With plenty of ice on the cove at the head of Long Lake, they were able to safely conduct an IF&W Sanctioned derby. This year 62 children registered for the derby along with 42 adults (some who were in the sanctioned area) and 18 parents who registered under the sanction.

Over 40 fish large and small were “hooked” in both open water and the Sanctioned area on Long Lake with the largest caught by Jesse Allen who caught a 6.4-pound, 23-inch Bass and was awarded a Youth Lifetime Fishing License. Trevor Ward came in second place with a 5.0-pound, 22-inch Bass and third place was Caleb Hafford with a 4.6-pound, 20-inch lb. Bass.

Three more Youth Lifetime Licenses were also awarded to children who caught the smallest legal fish in the Sanctioned area. Congratulations to Kaylee Politano who hooked a .15-ounce Yellow Perch, Brook Brown who pulled up a .35-ounce Bass and Ben Barker who caught a .95-ounce Brown Trout. The four licenses were donated by Derby sponsor Western Maine Fish and Game Club and Joe Jack, Derby Coordinator and owner of Lake Region Outfitters.

The following children caught fish on Long Lake outside the sanctioned area: Ethen Laubruskas, 3.05-pound Pickerel; Peter Brown, 2.4-pound Pickerel; Mike Pike, 1.65-pound Cusk, 1.95-pound Bass, two .15-ounce White Perch, .80-ounce Yellow Perch and a .45-ounce Splake; Paul Ward, .15, .60, .25, .20 and .40-ounce White Perch; Ryan Preston, 1.1-ounce and .55-ounce White Perch and Brennan Bass, 0.9-ounce Brown Trout. Alicia Patrie won the largest fish for the adult division with a 5.2-pound and 2.45-pound Cusk.

It was quite the competition in the Sanctioned area with 16 fish caught: Skyla Politano, 2.3-pound Pickerel; Nolan Allen, .40-pound Pickerel; Hannah Kimbal .50-ounce Pickerel; Dillon Brown, 1.6-pound Pickerel and .40-pound Bass; Quinn Scheferstien, .40-ounce Pickerel; Addison Allen, .85oz and .65-ounce Pickerel; Michael Politano, two-pound Pickerel; Everett Yannelli, .55-ounce White Perch and Grace Yanneli, .20-ounce Yellow Perch.

Also, congratulation to Cote Warner, who won the Ice Shack.
