Fourth, fifth, sixth grade dance planned
OXFORD — The Sons of American Legion announce that they will be hosting a fourth, fifth and sixth grade dance to be held at the Anderson-Staples American Legion Hall on King Street in Oxford, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, February 1.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. This is part of the Sons of the American Legion's youth outreach program. The dance will be chaperoned in part by the local Senior Girl Scout troops from the area to help them meet their community service obligation. In addition, there will be Girl Scout leaders and Sons in attendance. The music will be provided by TJ the DJ with a light show.
The capacity will be for no more than 250 dancers. Once the attendance numbers are reached no others will be admitted. There will be no rain/snow date due to scheduling problems. The price for the evening will be $5. Food will be available for sale in the kitchen, including hot dogs, grilled cheese, bread pizza, popcorn, hot chocolate and more.
Activities for the kids will be held including contests. "The kids should have a good time at this dance," spokesperson Skip Foley said. "There are rules including the parent having to bring the kids in and get a contact number. Once the students are in, they stay until they are picked up by their ride early. There will also be parking lot security."
According to Foley, this is the first dance of its type and age group in quite a while. It will provide a fun time for the kids. Foley also stated there would be door prizes that will be called out throughout the dance. The dance is open to anyone in the Oxford Hills area as well as Poland and Mechanic Falls.
For more information, parents can call the American Legion Post at 539-2649 and leave a message for a call back if there is no answer. The phone will be checked every day weather permitting.
For those who want to know, some of the proceeds will be donated to the Girl Scout troops and to help sponsor a current junior from Oxford to go to the Boys State/Girls State to be held in the spring. It is a highly educational experience and there are few openings due to the expensive cost. All recipients pay nothing to attend as is the American Legion policy. Boys and girls experience how to create a bill and pass it through the legislative method with juniors from all over the State of Maine.
