Middle School, Credit Union partnership supports community

AREA — Good things happen when a local business and a local school work together. Just ask Oxford Federal Credit Union (OFCU) and Oxford Hills Middle School, who are partners in education as part of the Oxford Hills Education Exchange.

“Typically businesses are asked to participate in their local schools by providing money or sponsorships for events or fundraisers to help purchase or provide something the school may need," said Kim Davis, Marketer at OFCU. “As part of the partnership program, Oxford Federal Credit Union is making contributions in a way that is tangible to the students, ” said Davis.

Some of the things OFCU provides for Oxford Hills Middle School include prizes for school events, items for fundraisers, transportation to OFCU’s free ski at Black Mountain and pizza parties for outstanding achievements, which are in addition to the financial literacy education that OFCU is committed to bringing to the school.

However, the word partnership is key. Middle school students are eager to do their share to fulfill the partnership. At a recent dance, students raised $500 for OFCU to donate to a charitable cause. It was decided to split the money and give half to Responsible Pet Care’s building fund and half to Oxford Hills Helping Hands Food Pantry.

The students were proud to contribute to both causes. To support the students fundraising, and the community, Oxford Federal Credit Union matched the donations, so that both RPC and Helping Hands received $500 donations.
