WOODSTOCK — Walter Everett Appleby Jr. (Joe Pete) died on January 9, 2013 at his home. He was born in Woodstock on July 22, 1929, the second oldest son to Walter and Evelyn Appleby of Woodstock. He attended the church school which is now called Forestdale on Perkins Valley Road in Woodstock. He received his diploma in 1947 at West Paris High School.

He spent most of his career working with his father in the family business, Appleby’s Plumbing and Heating. Throughout his life he had a variety of other places he worked as well: Penley’s, Timm Pond Cabins, Maurice Benson, LaVerdiere’s and Flagging.

He had a simple philosophy to life: If you are awake you should be having fun. Everyone who knew him usually walked away with a smile. He was an avid outdoorsman from a young age starting out by joining the 4H Club and raising chickens. He was a member of the Snowmobile Club, Coon Hunters Club, Union Cemetery Assoc. and Maine Sporting Dogs Assoc. Whatever he was doing in life you can be sure that his love of nature wasn’t far behind. He will forever be in our hearts especially the fisherman in him and the heartfelt enthusiasm he had spinning his tales.

Mr. Appleby was predeceased by his loving wife, Laurene Buck Appleby; his sisters, Cleo Ryerson of Woodstock and Betty Jean Estabrook of Lisbon; all six of his children, Walter E. Appleby III of Woodstock, Pamela Dow of Lewiston, Patricia Stevens of Sumner, Linda Smith of West Paris, Lolita Grass of Limington and Danielle Appleby of Rumford; 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Woodstock S.D.A. Church on Perkins Valley Rd. in Woodstock on January 13, with Pastor Greg Carlson officiating. Memorials in his memory may be made to assist with funeral costs; donations above and beyond the cost of the funeral will be donated to the Woodstock S.D.A. Church food pantry at 25 Perkins Valley Rd. Bryant Pond, ME 04219. Arrangements were by Cliff Gray Cremation & Funeral Services, 60 Andrews Road, Bryant Pond.
