Iva E. Yates
PARIS — Iva E. Yates died at Market Square Health Care Center in South Paris on Monday, January 7, 2013, at the age of 94. She was born in Woodstock on October 19, 1918, the daughter of Hannah Emmons Yates and Lendall Bishop Yates. Her father died while the family lived in Yarmouth, as he was the proprietor of a general store there. After his death in 1924, her mother took the girls to live with her sister Lucy and her husband Ralph Richardson in Norway. Miss Yates was a 1936 graduate of Norway High School. She had also lived briefly in Manchester, NH during her young adulthood and for four years in Lisbon Falls.
A resident of Norway for many years, she worked at the Norway shoe shop with her sister Laura for a few years until she became unable to work due to her health. Although she had no children of her own, she spent many a day caring for her niece, Sue-Anne Tyler York, who passed away in 2011 and then her grandniece, Johannah. She was a devoted fan of Elvis Presley. She loved all God’s creatures, but was especially fond of cats, and cared for many feral cats, as well as wild animals throughout her lifetime.
Miss Yates was a loving sister to Ona Yates Tyler and Laura Yates, both of whom predeceased her. She was also predeceased by her longtime companion, Marcel H. Martin, in 2011. She leaves a grandniece, Johannah York, of North Conway, NH; several cousins and her neighbor, Mike McLeod. Online condolences may be shared with her family at www.chandlerfunerals.com.
