Gertrude E. Hesse
OXFORD — Gertrude Elizabeth (Steele) Hesse, 107, of Oxford, formerly of Enfield, CT, passed away at Norway Rehabilitation & Living Center in Norway on Wednesday, August 1, 2012. She was born in Enfield, CT on January 11, 1905, daughter of James and Sophie (Bennett) Steele of Connecticut. She was married to Carl E. Hesse; he passed away in 1968.
She worked as a meat wrapper for Geisslers in Warehouse Point, CT for 17 years.
Mrs. Hesse was a past Matron and lifetime member of the Evening Star #63 in Warehouse Point, CT, life member of Senior Citizens, Inc., Warehouse Point, CT and holder of the Boston Post Cane in Oxford (oldest citizen).
She lived many years in Warehouse Point, having also lived in East Longmeadow with her granddaughter, Cyndi. She has lived in Oxford the past seven years with her son, the past two years at Norway Rehabilitation in Norway. While at Norway Rehab., she was affectionately known to all as Gigi. She was very active in all functions there, including participating in plays and fundraisers for the residential activities.
Mrs. Hesse is survived by her son, Robert C. Hesse, Sr. and wife Patricia of Oxford; grandchildren, Robert C. Hesse, Jr. and wife Nancy of Enfield, CT, Cyndi Fish of East Longmeadow, MA, Kym Hesse of Lyman, SC, Michael Burnham and wife Nita of Maricopa, AZ and Jessica Lippincott of Maricopa, AZ; great-grandchildren, Chelsea Fisk of East Longmeadow, MA, Robert Fisk of East Longmeadow, MA, Nicole Burnham, McKayla Burnham and Hayden Lippincott of Maricopa, AZ; sister, Evelyn Beer of Springfield, MA and special mention, Barbara Hesse of Lyman, SC (ex-daughter-in-law). She is predeceased by her husband, Carl; brothers, George James, Fred and Ernie Steele and sisters, Elsie Sokol and Eleanor Albano.
Graveside services were held on Monday, August 13 at the Springdale Cemetery in Warehouse Point, CT. Local arrangements under the care of Oxford Hills and Weston Funeral Services, 1037 Main St., Oxford. On-line condolences may be expressed to the family at www.oxfordhillsfuneralservices.com.
