OXFORD — Russell Stanley Herbert, 57, of Oxford died Friday, July 27, 2012 at the Maine VA Healthcare Center at Togus. He was born in Laconia, NH on July 28, 1954, the son of Raymond and Simone Valliere Herbert.

On July 11, 2009 he married Kristin Ellen Elliott; they renewed their vows as a sacrament in the Catholic Church on February 4, 2012.

Mr. Herbert had worked many years for the United States government, retiring in 2004. He faithfully served his country in the United States Navy. He loved to travel, spending time in Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona. He and his wife had lived in the Oxford area for the past three years, moving here from Thermopolis, WY.

He is a communicant of St. Catherine's of Sienna in Norway. He is a member of the Masonic Lodge #23 of Freeport, American Legion Post #112 of Oxford, DAV Chapter ME 1. During his military service, he served on the USS Holland AS-32, USS Iwo Jima LPH -2 and also on the USS Valdez.

Mr. Herbert is survived by his wife, Kristin Elliott-Herbert of Oxford; three step-children, Jason Worthing of Westbrook, Keith Worthing of South Portland and Rachel Worthing of Saco; three brothers, Glen and his wife Julie of Cape Elizabeth, Keith and his wife Virginia of Florida and Raymond of Germany and a sister, Melody Ruthier of New Hampshire. He was predeceased by his parents and also his step-father, Richard Manseau of New Hampshire.

A visitation was held on Tuesday, July 31 at Oxford Hills & Weston Funeral Services, 1037 Main St., Route 26, Oxford. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, August 1 at St. Catherine's of Sienna in Norway. Interment will be at the Veterans Cemetery in Augusta, time and day to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Herbert's memory may be sent to St. Joseph's Indian School, Chamberlain, SD 57326 (www.stjo.org).
