GREENE — Herbert Sawyer, 94, a resident of Sawyer Road, Greene, died early Thursday morning, July 12, 2012 at his home. He was born May 14, 1918 in Winthrop, the son of Mr. Sawyer and Leila Robinson. He attended school in Winthrop. He served in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre during World War II. On November 30, 1945 in Lisbon Falls, he married Hazel P. Clark. They were blessed with two children, Carol and William.

Mr. Sawyer worked as an auto technician at Bonefide Mills, Smith & McCarthy and the Brunswick Naval Exchange, retiring in 1976. After his retirement he spent many years delivering Meals on Wheels. He was a member of the West Bowdoin Baptist Church where he had previously served as Deacon.

He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening. He was always available to play cards with family and friends. Above all else though, he loved and enjoyed spending time with his family.

Mr. Sawyer is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Gene Ridley of Greene; his son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Beverly Sawyer of Bowdoin; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Hazel Sawyer in 2009. 

A graveside funeral service with military honors was held on Monday, July 16 at Woodlawn Cemetery in Bowdoin. Arrangements by Bradgdon-Finley Funeral Home, 707 Main Street, Monmouth. Messages of condolence may be sent to www.finleyfuneralhome.com.
