Elizabeth B. Smith
NORWAY — Elizabeth B. “Betty” Smith of Norway passed away on Thursday, January 31, 2013. She was born in Chisholm (Jay), the daughter of the late Ascenzo and Crocifissa Di Giacomo Benedetto and graduated from Jay High School. She married Gordon E. Smith on September 24, 1951.
She was employed in the Norway Town Office. She was very active in the community and was a supporter of many charitable organizations including Stephens Memorial Hospital and the Norway Library and was a member of St. Catherine of Sienna Church. She was an avid reader and enjoyed taking long walks and playing bridge. She touched many lives with her kindness and loved to give away her home made peanut butter balls. She enjoyed spending time with her large extended family and especially her grandsons.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her son, Michael and his wife Beth of Bethlehem, PA, and three grandsons, Benjamin, Matthew and William all of Bethlehem. She is also survived by her brother Arthur Benedetto of Chisholm, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 59 years, Gordon, in 2011. She was also predeceased by her brothers, Querino, Albert and Joseph and her sisters, Grace LaPointe, Mena Hynds, Angela Musto, Jennie Frechette and Margaret Frechette.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, March 2 at 11 a.m. at St. Catherine of Sienna Church, Paris St., Norway. Family and friends may attend visitation from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Chandler Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, 45 Main St., South Paris prior to the church service. Interment will be later in the spring at Lakeview Cemetery in Norway. Donations in her memory may be made to Stephens Memorial Hospital, 181 Main St., Norway, ME 04268.
