Recalled selectmen in bid to retake seats

POLAND —  A special election for selectmen March 4 will pit ousted board members against members of the recall committee.

Seven candidates have filed papers to fill three seats on the board of selectmen left empty after voters removed Wendy Sanborn, Larry Moreau and James Fernald from the board on January 3.

The three members were accused of violating the town charter when they fired former town manager Rosemary Kulow last October.

On March 4, a special election will be held to fill two two-year terms and one one-month term.

Walter Gallagher and Sandra Knowles have filed to be candidates for the one-month seat.

Fernald and Moreau have put their names in to reclaim their lost seats, but face three challengers.

Michelle Arsenault and Stan Tetenman, members of the recall committee that organized the January vote, have filed nomination papers. Tetenman is also the chair of the town's comprehensive planning committee.

Janice Kimball is the third candidate.

The special election will be quickly followed by Poland's annual town meeting, April 5.

Two more seats on the board will be up for grabs in that election. Papers are already available at the Poland Town Office and are due back February 19.
