Otisfield hoping to offer dance, exercise sessions

OTISFIELD —  In addition to providing community luncheons, the Otisfield Community Social Group is hoping to soon offer more activities, including exercising sessions, the group's coordinator told selectmen October 17. 

According to Elaine Doble-Verrill, some attendees of a recent community lunch expressed interest in inviting speakers to discuss different topics, while a majority would like to have exercise programs available to them. 

She told selectmen that about a year ago, the group met to discuss what activities to offer residents in addition to community luncheons. 

According to Doble-Verrill, around 230 people attend the community luncheons, held the third Wednesday of every month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

On October 29 from 2-4 p.m. State Director of AARP Maine Lori Parham will be at the Otisfield Town Office to give a presentation and answer any questions about the basics of MediCare and changes under the Affordable Care Act, as well as Social Security basics and options for changing both MediCare  and Social Security and the pros and cons of doing so. 

The presentation is free to attend. 

People are also really interested in exercise, said Doble-Verrill. 

Type of exercise include ecstatic dance, T'ai Chi, yoga, step aerobics, Zumba, ballroom dancing and exercise specific for seniors. 

The only problem, she said, is that space may be limited depending on the number of people who attend. Selectmen said the groups would be more than welcome to use the Community Hall or the meeting room at the town office. 

A questionnaire will be available at the town office and on the town's website, www.otisfieldme.gov, to see what type of program people would be most interested in. 

Doble-Verrill said she'd like to see more younger people get involved in community social activities and hopes to increase interest by offering local dance classes.
