Merger petition halfway there

PARIS —   As of Tuesday afternoon, between 100 and 150 people had signed a petition requesting the town place a referendum on the Norway-Paris police merger on the November ballot, according to Mary Beth Caffey, petition organizer.

Caffey, a Paris Hill resident, says she and four other volunteers will probably not reach the required 243 signatures.

Regardless, she is still encouraged by the number of people who were willing to sign the petition.

Caffey says she plans on delivering the signed petitions to the selectmen at their September 24 meeting.

According to Caffey, community reception to the petition has been positive.

She says many people –  even those who said they would vote against the merger –  told her that they would like to see the question on the ballot.

"They just thought it would be more fair if more people were allowed to vote," said Caffey.
