Town office burglary repair to cost $1,315

HEBRON — As a result of a burglary at the town office last fall, the town is looking at $1,315 in materials and labor to fix damage done to a few of the office's doors, said Chairman Dick Deans at the June 25 selectmen's meeting.

Deans said that the town has already replaced the back door to the building, but still needs to replace the door leading into the basement and to put metal strips by the locks "so they don't get picked."

Deans also said that the hinges, which now have removable pins, will be replaced with more sturdy ones, and all the doors will get new weather stripping.

In November, a Lewiston man was arrested after breaking in to the town office and damaging three doors with a pry bar in a vain attempt to find a safe.

Selectmen said there is no safe in the building and that breaking into the town office is a waste of time.

Selectman Jim Reid suggested that, next year at town meeting, the town should consider installing a security system to deter burglars and vandals.

Money to pay for the damage will come out of the town office expense account.
