Merchant marines to be added
WOODSTOCK — After a discussion with Wayne Hakala and Elsie Bonney, the Woodstock Board of Selectmen agreed to add the names of any merchant mariners who served in World War II, and Coast Guard personell who serverd in time of war, to the Veterans Monument.
Veterans who have or had a connection with Woodstock will have their names entered on the memorial located near the Whitman Memorial Library.
Hakala pointed out that both these groups had been declared veterans "by an Act of Congress" and "to not recognize them would be a disgrace to Woodstock." The board unanimously agreed.
Addressing residents of the Concord Pond Road, Town Manager Vern Maxfield said that work on that road "might start next week." The work will consist of ditching, replacement of four culverts, resetting of seven culverts and adding three inches of gravel to be compacted.
Also discussed were a stop sign for Granite Ledge Road and a sign warning motorists of bicyclists.
Maxfield reported that the town's attorney is still researching the Billings Hill Road. The possibility of creating an agency relationship, subject to proof of liability insurance, with a local resident to perform maintenance was also discussed.
