George Cummings is Veteran of the Month

PARIS — George O. Cummings is Veteran of the Month at Maine Veterans Home in South Paris.

George was born in Philadelphia, PA and grew up in Washington, DC and Maine. He graduated from high school and then went on to college. He joined the Army in December 1963 and served in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic during the Vietnam War. He worked for the military police in the 82nd airborne division. He achieved the rank E4.

George was discharged in December 1966 with several honors - the National Defense service medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary medal, Parachute badge, and a bronze star with V device. After his discharge from the service, he got married and had two daughters; he also has seven grandchildren. He worked as a manager of a boat marina after the service.

George enjoys skiing, sailboat racing, playing cards ”hearts” and listening to his talking books – he really enjoys sea stories and wishes he could have sailed around the world. He also enjoys listening to country music, exercising, walking outside and spending time with his wife, Kathy.

George came to the Maine Veterans' Home in April 2011 and resides on the C- unit. Thank you, George, for your service.
