Richard Lashua, Veteran of the Month

SOUTH PARIS — Richard Lashua was born in Lewiston on August 21, 1931 and grew up in Gray. He served in the Navy during the Korean War from 1950 to 1954 and achieved the rank of 3rd class petty officer. He served on the USS Saipan CVL 48 carrier for about three and a half years, and then was stationed on another carrier for the last six months of his service.

During his service Virginia was his home port; he also traveled to Italy, Spain, France, Cuba and Puerto Rico. Richard was a boatian mate; he stood watch on the ship and also got to steer the ship which he really enjoyed doing.

After his discharge he joined the Merchant Marines for a while.

He went to Indiana for about eight years and worked in a meat packing house. He also worked for a steel and wire company and eventually came back home to Maine after the passing of his second wife. He did construction work up until he retired.

Richard was married twice and had two stepchildren and two grandchildren.

Richard received the Navy Occupation Service Medal (EUR Clasp) and the National Defense Medal.

He enjoys playing bingo, listening to music and doing crossword puzzles.

Mr. Lashua resides on the residential care unit at the Maine Veterans Home. Thank you Richard, for your service.
