Veteran recognition is scheduled
GREENWOOD — On October 14, the Jackson-Silver American Legion Post #68 will host a Veteran Recognition day for Oxford County veterans and their families at their Greenwood location on Gore Rd.
They will recognize the service of local veterans who served in any war, including but not limited to Desert Storm, Iraq and Afghanistan. The event will also recognize 154 casualties of four wars (WW1, WW2, Korea and Vietnam).
During the last three years, the River Valley towns (in Oxford County) have held several veteran recognition events with support from the Maine Veteran Services organization.
For that reason, it has been decided to limit the October 14 event to the remaining Oxford County towns.
There is a computer database with the names of over 8,000 veterans who entered the service from one of the following Oxford County towns:
Bethel, Buckfield, Brownfield, Denmark, Fryeburg, Greenwood, Hartford, Hiram, Lincoln Pl, Lovell, Milton Pl, Newry, Norway, Oxford, Paris, Stoneham, Stow, Sweden, Waterford, West Paris and Woodstock.
To participate in the October 14 event, please identify each veteran prior to September 15. Include any pertinent information regarding awards received (Purple Heart, BSM, Silver Star, Etc).
Please contact either of the following to submit names of veterans to be recognized: Len Greaney, Oxford County Veteran Researcher: 74 Andover Road, Rumford, ME 04276; e-mail Len.Greaney@Gmail.com; 364-7485 or Wayne Hakala, Commander, Post #68: e-mail jacksonsilverpost68@roadrunner.com; 527-2234.
They will coordinate local information with Peter Ogden, Director, Maine Veteran Services to prepare the service awards for each participant.
They ask that a family member of any one of the known casualties from either of the following Wars contact them to confirm your participation at the recognition event: Wars: WW1, WW2, Korea or Vietnam.
The planned Veteran Recognition event will be one of the largest events of its kind in Maine. Please plan to participate to honor those who have served our country from Oxford County.
