The role of a newspaper

To the Editor:

The role of a newspaper, especially a local paper, is basically two fold. It is the job of the News Room reporters to find and point out problems. It is the job of the Editorial staff to suggest solutions based upon fact, not political fancy, ideology or religious bigotry, to solve those problems.

For example, if the problem pointed out is one of corrupt politicians, judges, cops, or media, the job of the reporter is to ferret out the problems and identify, if at all possible, the culprits, again based upon solid investigative reporting, not political bigotry or religious wishful thinking.

The Editorial staff would then make suggestions. Now in our example above, the editorial writer might suggest a public flogging, or perhaps hanging, but not forgiveness based upon the editor's love of the political ideology of the person or love of that person.
